Scout Campout
September 30, 2006 by jon.
Our den went on a Webelos campout this weekend. For some of the families it was the first time they went camping. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and even said that we need to do a den campout in the future.
I had a full turnout in that all scouts at least stayed the night. One had to leave for a football game but the rest completed 4 activity badges. Athlete, Showman, Geologist and Outdoorsman. A great start to the year.
This was a true scouting campout. Bugle calls for gathering, lights out and waking up (7:00). Plus all cooking was outdoors. Breakfast scrambled eggs were cooked in dutch ovens. For lunch we cooked foil packs in a long trench filled with charcoal. The packs had hamburger & fries and some veggies. Very good. Reminds me of when I did scouting. I’m liking that we are getting to the age where we can do some of the more fun events and activites.

Senslessness
September 28, 2006 by jon.
Kala and I were pretty shook up with the news from Colorado that a gunman had gone into a high school and ended up killing a girl. We lived in the Columbine area when that shooting took place in 1999 and it’s hard to forget the images. It’s amazing how something like this can bring back feelings and memories. To this day I get a little disturbed when I see a helicopter hovering because of the number of helicopters at that time.
While we do not know anyone directly affected by this tragedy, we feel for them. Platte Canyon High School was in my school’s conference so we played them in sports. I never really knew anyone that went there, but this still hits close to home.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim, the families of the students and staff as well as the emergency personell who responded. This will be a hard one to get over.

Library Life
September 27, 2006 by Kala.
Well, story time is back in full swing as of yesterday. We had about 100 families move thru the children’s area at the library during my shift. Hard to put away books when there are so many patrons. It was really nice to see the kids though - it’s funny because some remember me from last year and now that they are a year older they are a little more friendly. I had one little boy who was very excited to tell me that he got to go on a real train over the summer - I had pointed him out where the train videos are and I guess he remembered that I was the one to help him. It was sweet.

A New Toy
September 26, 2006 by jon.
Thanks to some birthday money, I went a bought myself a present. A Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS unit. This is for running and is a sweet unit!. It tracks speed, pace, elevation and a bunch of other things. I tried it out today and I liked how it worked. I was more amazed at what I could do after the run.
I signed up on MotionBased.com and then uploaded my route. Now I can analyze the route, compare to others, check the weather and share. Pretty amazing. I’m liking this unit. I can’t wait until I do more runs with it.
Check out my profile on MotionBased to follow my runs.

Weekend Baseball
September 26, 2006 by jon.
Our Saturday game was rained out but the Sunday game against the Tigers went ahead as scheduled. Brad had a very good game. He played Third base and ran down a runner who over-shot Second. He also played Second and First and had good plays both times. They had him warming up as pitcher, but he didn’t make it in this time.
Brad also had a good game at the plate. He struck out the first at bat but then had two singles. One hit was a RBI and he scored a run.
The Rangers ended up winning 7-6. I think we’re 5-0. We have a really good team this season and they are playing well together.

A Good Long Run
September 24, 2006 by jon.
I did everything wrong this week and I still felt good running 14 today. Go figure. Last night we had some friends over and I drank some beer (Fat Tire!) as well as had a lot of cheese fondue and steak and crab. Basically I over ate. Oh and this week I ended up missing a run because I couldn’t fit it in.
Yet this morning’s run went well. I felt strong all the way through and felt like I could have gone a few more miles. I was sore and tired after, but that comes with the territory. Also had an issue with some chaffing, but that too comes with the territory. And of course, we had a cub scout bike ride today so I got even more exercise in for my legs.
So all in all a good day running. 14 more today, 24 for the week and 492 miles for the year. Next week is my last long, long run. 20 miles.
Only 28 more days until the Chicago Marathon.

Cheerleading
September 23, 2006 by Robyn.
I know my cheerleading coach’s name. It’s Mrs. Rose. We learned a cheer this week. I can show it to you the next time I see you. The cheer goes like this: Go Vikings Go!
I have a person in my cheerleading class who is also in my school class. Her name is Allana.
Thats it!

piano
September 23, 2006 by Robyn.
piano is fun. I would like to learn a little bit more. I learned over probably a 100 songs! I have practice on Wednesdays. He told me to bring some books home so I can practice every day.
First before I go to piano lessons, I have to go home and get a snack real quick, get all my books then we have to hurry.

And the Heavens Opened Up!
September 22, 2006 by jon.
We got a little rain today. I have no idea how much, but the park across the street has up to 18 inches of standing water. The retention area nearby has over 3 feet! You can read about the storm at the Daily Herald | News.
We had our own little drama when the kids noticed water streaming in the basement window. Turns out the window well had over a foot of water in it and water just started pouring in. I ended up going out side to bail while the kids ran the wet vac and Kala hunted down blankets to stop the flood. Luckily it was only 3 series of storms. If a fourth came through, we would have had standing water in the basement.
Here’s some photos of the aftermath.

Lesson #2
September 20, 2006 by Kala.
Well, today was Robyn’s 2nd piano lesson. She is taking lessons at a studio about 3/4 mile from our house, once a week, for an hour. She came home still very excited about what she had learned and ready to practice, practice, practice right away. I had to tell her to go out and jump for a few minutes so that she could get out some energy! I’m very excited for her. Her teacher, David, seems to be able to keep the lessons fun and not just scales or drills (somewhat boring stuff). He still does some of that stuff but will write a composition for her if she has a song that she wants to learn how to play so that it is at her level of playing at that time. I’m amazed at how well she can read sheet music in just two lessons. I don’t even know what the notes are on the paper but she does. It is very cool to watch her excel at something - God definately gave her the love of music as she is always dancing and singing around the house. She’s already talking about how she has to write Uncle Kevin a song.
Soon we’ll have the ability to either upload her playing or we’ll have access to the studio website so that those of you interested in hearing how she progresses can follow along.
And it’s all because of a lil’ song called “the Bear Neccessities” that Grandma K taught her when we were home in June- who knew - she is still playing that one too!

14 Was Quick
September 20, 2006 by Kala.
Yesterday Jon and I celebrated 14 years of wedded bliss. Now, you ask, has it always been “bliss”? No. There have been trials along the way. I’m grateful that I have Jon beside me to walk the road. We’ve shared a lot of laughter, lots of tears, lots of prayers over the course of our time. I’m also grateful for some of the struggles that we’ve faced together - it’s shown me what a man of integrity that I’ve married. I’m proud to be his wife. He has helped me to become a more loving, patient and firm mom with our munchkins.
Thank you for asking me…all those years ago love. Know that my answer today would be the same as then - YES!!!!
With love - Kala

14 Years
September 19, 2006 by jon.
It’s hard to believe that it was 14 years ago today that my lovely wife said “I Do”. Who would have predicted the changes in our lives, our growing together and our coming closer to the Lord. Having 2 wonderful kids? Wow. I am so proud of our kids and how they have blessed our lives. Moving away from Colorado? Who would have thought yet Kala followed me, supported me and now we have been making a life for ourselves here.
A lot has happened in these 14 years, but the most significant is that we have grown closer together. We love and understand each other. As Kala said at our wedding, the words “You are my best friend” still hold true.
The Lord has blessed us immensly and I pray that He continues to be with us and bless us for many more years.
I Love You Kala!
