The Challenge

Today we started a exercise challenge for our family.  For 8 weeks we will be tracking the amount of excercise each of us gets outside of our normal activities.  The person who has the most time exercising after 8 weeks will win an IPod!

The rules are that it must be other than a normal activity.  So recess or baseball or softball doesn’t count for the kids.  Also, it is open to all four of us.  Lastly we are tracking excercise in 15 minute increments for a maximum of 1 hour a day.  This keeps it realistic and doesn’t let one of us get too far ahead or behind.

Let us know what you think of this.  Good luck to all and we’ll keep you informed on how it goes.

New Look at Coffee and Bagels at 8

We have a new look on the website.  Please tell me what you think.  The old look had some problems where it wasn’t displaying text properly.  So in order for you to see everything I changed things around.

I’ll contact tech support and see if they can fix the other.  Depending on how you like this new template, I’ll either change back or keep it this way.  So please let me know in the comments if you will.

Thanks,  Jon

Running by Robyn

Running is fun to do.  Sometimes it could hurt your back because you get sore.  Most of the time it hurts your legs because you have to move them a lot.  If you keep on running you can stay healthy.

I’m going to do a mile run at school for the presidential physical fitness test.  It will be hard but I hope to do well.  I will also be running 1 mile at Springfest this year when Brad runs with Dad for the 5K.

Running the mile run is kind of hard but sometimes it can be easy.  If you try, you can probably do at least 2 or 3 laps at the gym in my school.  (1 mile is 18 laps)

I want to do well in the mile run but if I don’t that’s ok.

No Chicago This Year

As of noon today, the Chicago Marathon has closed for registration. Not that I was planning on running the race, but it’s still kind of a sad day. My first marathon (And only).

I compared my running logs from last year to this one. I’m about 20 miles behind this year but I think with the back problems that I’ve had, that is not too bad. So where am I? About 76 miles. I’ll take it.

Running is getting better so I soon hope to start adding the miles on. Not too much, but I would like to get around 20 miles a week in a few months. So far I have hit 10 miles in a week this year. I have a ways to go.

Bible Study on the Book of Revelation

My men’s small group will be starting a study on Revelation this coming Friday. Should be really interesting. This will be a pretty intensive study taking more than 12 weeks. I’m looking forward to getting back in to Revelation. It’s been since around high school since the last time I’ve done an intensive study of the book. We are using the Life Change series book from Navpress.

Let me know your thoughts on Studying the book of Revelations. It seems like there are many interprations and I’m hoping a praying that we are following the right study and learn from this study.

Good Run

On Thursday after meeting with Dr. Mark, I went for a 4 mile run.  This was the first time this year that I was able to run and my back wasn’t sore at all.  I felt great!

I did another 3.5 miles with church on Saturday and even that felt ok.  Of course, when I’m not running I’m moving like an old man.  (Slow to get out of chairs and can’t stand long)

I got the Core Performance back from our neighbor so Kala and I started some of the excercises.  We both hope to strengthen our core muscles and obtain overall general health.  Today (Sunday) will really be the first time we start on the program.  Hopefully it will go well.

Cleared to run

Well, sort of…  I saw Dr. Mark today and he said my hips looked pretty good.  At least they really aren’t to bad for alignment.  This means I can run a little more.  I have been doing between 8-10 miles a week.  Now to ramp it up…slowly.

Last time I saw Dr. Mark, he recommended the book Core Performance.

I got it and have been doing some exercises from it.  Good stuff.  Now I actually need to start doing some of the training routines in the book to really see the benefit.

Basically it is stretches and exercises to strenghten the core.  This will help keep my hips aligned, my posture straight and help me run better.  I can’t wait for that, but I need to do the book.  (Of course, I lent it to a neighbor so I have to wait until it comes back)

Hopefully soon I’ll have a routine in place that will get my core in shape and my hip and back problems will go away.  Then onwards and upwards with running.

Running with the family

I had the opportunity to run with my kids yesterday. I’ve started running with our church CCC this year again. They have Saturday runs that meet at the church. I was going to miss because Kala has Bible Study Saturday mornings, but then a friend called Friday night saying he was going. Well, I’ve been wanting to run with Larry for a while so I couldn’t turn it down.

Of course, yesterday was cold and windy. So I bundled up the kids and away we went. When we got there, Taksina, AKA Wonder Woman,

couldn’t make the run so she asked me to lead the beginner’s group. No problem since I had the kids and wanted to run with Larry anyway.

There were 9 of us including me and the kids. We jogged for 1 min and then walked for 1 min. We did laps around the church. After the first lap, Robyn had enough of the cold and went back in the car. She did about .7 miles. Brad ran another lap and then went in the car as well. He did almost 1.5 miles. The rest of us did one more lap and ended up with 2.15 miles.

I heard Larry say that at the beginning he thought it was no problem with the run/walk, but near the end it was pretty difficult. (Larry has run before, but it’s been years)

Brad has said he wants to run the Springfest 5K with me again this year. Robyn is planning on doing the kids 1 mile. Good goals and I’m glad to run with them.
I wanted to get in a few more miles so I ran again today with Shay. Another 3 miles. Can’t wait until I can start piling on the miles, but for now I need to take it easy.

Hit by spam

Our blog was hit by a spammer and I had over 20 “Comments” in the last day.  So to prevent this, I had to put a block in place that will ask someone who wants to post a comment a math question (I.E. 2+3).  This will stop the automated spammers from hitting us again.

Sorry about this.

Trin deployed again

A little while ago I talked about finding my college roommate again online.  Well Trin was just deployed to Afghanistan for the third time.  Please keep him and his family in your prayers along with all of our service men and women.

If you would like to contact Trin, he is at artsoldier35@yahoo.com and his postal address is:

Long time

Has it really been that long?  I see it’s been over 3 weeks since our last post.  Sorry.  It’s been quite busy and I honestly haven’t wanted to sit in front of a computer.  We had a virus at work that had me working late every night one week.  Then I’ve been traveling to different places with my work.

We’ve also been to a concert (TobyMac at House of Blues).

Actually, the family also saw By The Tree Sunday but I was traveling.  Robyn had her final cheerleading class (You gotta see the video…soon to be posted).  And Brad started Baseball.  It’s been busy.

This is just a filler post until I get up enough gumption to put somethting real in.  For now, hang tight.  We’ll be back.
